Tattoo Balm vs Lotion: Which One Should You Use?

Tattoo balm and lotion both moisturize tattooed skin, but they feel and work differently. A balm is rich and concentrated, so a small amount goes a long way on smaller areas and dry spots. A lotion is lighter and spreads fast, which makes it easier for daily care on large areas. A simple routine uses both: balm or a light gel in the first weeks, and lotion for everyday care once the tattoo has fully settled. Here's how to choose.

Key differences

  • Texture: balm is thick and melts into the skin as you massage it in. Lotion is a soft cream that spreads easily.
  • Ingredients: our Tattoo Balm contains no water. It's made mostly of shea butter, cocoa butter, plant oils and beeswax. Our Body Lotion is water-based, with safflower, sesame and sweet almond oils and vitamins A, D3 and E.
  • Feel: balm feels richer on the skin. Lotion feels light and non-greasy and absorbs fast.
  • Coverage: a small amount of balm covers a lot of skin. Lotion spreads quickly over large areas like sleeves, legs and backs.
  • Timing: balm fits the first weeks and ongoing care for dry spots. Lotion fits daily care once the tattoo has fully settled.

Neither one is better in every case. The right choice depends on the stage of your tattoo, its size and how your skin feels.

When to use balm

Reach for balm when you want rich moisture from a small amount.

  • In the first weeks, once your artist says it's time for aftercare.
  • On dry, tight or peeling skin.
  • On smaller tattoos, or spots that dry out fast like hands, elbows and knees.
  • On older tattoos that look dull because the skin is dry.

Our Tattoo Balm blends shea butter, cocoa butter and calendula oil. Start with clean, dry skin. Take a small amount, warm it between your fingertips and massage it in until it absorbs. If the skin looks greasy afterward, you used too much.

When to use lotion

Reach for lotion when you want light, everyday moisture over more skin.

  • For daily care once the peeling has stopped and your artist says your tattoo has fully settled.
  • On large areas like sleeves, legs and back pieces.
  • After a shower, when your skin is clean.
  • In the morning, when you want moisture that won't feel heavy under clothes.

Our Body Lotion is a light, non-greasy formula for all skin types, inked or not. Wash your hands, then massage a small amount into the area until it absorbs. Reapply as needed, especially after a shower.

Where soothing gel fits

Gel is the lightest of the three textures. Our Soothing Gel is a water-based aloe gel with panthenol and hyaluronic acid. It cools on contact, absorbs fast and calms the look of redness.

In the Tsunami Balm routine, Soothing Gel is a first-weeks product. Start when your artist says it's time for aftercare, and apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin. You can keep using it later, too, when skin feels warm after a workout or on a hot day.

A daily routine

The first weeks

  • Follow your artist's instructions first.
  • Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild soap, then pat dry.
  • Apply a thin layer of Soothing Gel.
  • Use Tattoo Balm when the skin feels dry or tight.
  • Keep the tattoo out of the sun, and stay out of pools, baths and hot tubs.

Once your tattoo has fully settled

  • Use Body Lotion every day, especially after a shower.
  • Use Tattoo Balm on spots that dry out fast, or when ink looks dull.
  • Use Sunscreen SPF 50 when your tattoo will see the sun. It's an OTC drug, so follow the Drug Facts label.

If you see a rash, spreading redness, heat or swelling at any stage, stop using the product and see a doctor. Let your artist know as well.

Which size to buy

  • Tattoo Balm 1.7 oz: a small amount goes a long way, so this size works well for smaller pieces and fits easily in a bag.
  • Body Lotion 3.4 oz: the travel size. Good for a gym bag, a carry-on or a first try.
  • Body Lotion 16.9 oz pump: the larger bottle for sleeves, backs and full-body work.
  • Soothing Gel 3.4 oz: the light, cooling step for the first weeks.
  • Tattoo Care Set: all five products in one gift box: Tattoo Balm, Soothing Gel, Numbing Gel, Sunscreen SPF 50 and Body Lotion. A good pick for new ink or as a gift. Read each label for directions and warnings before use.

FAQ

Can I use tattoo balm on an old tattoo?

Yes. Balm moisturizes dry skin on tattoos of any age. Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin and massage it in until it absorbs.

Is balm or lotion better for a new tattoo?

Follow your artist first. In our routine, Soothing Gel and Tattoo Balm cover the first weeks, and Body Lotion takes over once the tattoo has fully settled.

Can I use balm and lotion together?

Yes, at different times or on different areas. For example, use lotion on a sleeve in the morning and balm on dry spots at night. Don't stack heavy layers.

Which one absorbs faster?

Lotion and gel absorb faster than balm. Balm needs a little warmth and massage, but you need much less of it.
